When choosing bed sheets, you will not only have to think about the type of fabric (cotton percale sheets, flannel, linen...) but also about the size and design. This is on a practical level, without going into the aesthetic one. These questions are important when it comes to rest because each fiber contributes something different to our body. In the same way, knowing the characteristics of the fabrics will help you take better care of them when washing, hanging, and ironing, which will make the task easier for you and extend the life of the sheets. In this article, we’ll also introduce an innovative tool—the AI Fabric Design Generator—to help you create unique and personalized textile designs.
What to consider when choosing bed sheets?
The Fabric
The material your sheets are made of is key. Choose natural fabrics for your bedding set, such as linen and cotton or percale cotton (we'll explain below how one sheet differs from another), as they will provide a natural and stylish feel to your bedroom. A natural fabric also has better breathability and prevents allergies.
Good quality bedding is comfortable and promotes proper rest.
The material will also make the sheets easier to iron (for example, the wrinkle in linen is beautiful and almost impossible to remove, but that's its charm). It will also ensure proper breathability, absorption, and evaporation of moisture—conditions that help you rest.
All-natural fabrics can be mixed with polyester, which gives them certain characteristics and makes them cheaper. It is easy to find cotton sheets with a polyester blend, for example, so they do not wrinkle as much. Polyester should not exceed 50% of the fabric so that it does not lose softness.
The Measurements
Each sheet corresponds to a mattress size. It is important to know the dimensions of your mattress, not only length and width but also height, because if it is higher than normal, you will have to take this into account—not only in the fitted sheet but also in the top sheet—so that it fits properly on the sides. The top sheet is not adjustable, and its measurement is always much larger than that of the mattress. The fitted sheet is the size of the mattress. Being adjustable makes it easier to put on and prevents it from moving or coming off with use.
· If your mattress is 150 x 200 cm: Choose a top sheet measuring 240 x 280 cm, a duvet cover measuring 240 x 260 cm, and a bedspread or comforter also measuring 240 x 260 cm.
· If your mattress is 180 cm wide: The top sheet should be 270 x 280 cm, the duvet cover 260 x 270 cm, and a quilt or duvet 260 x 270 cm. In the case of fitted sheets, it will also depend on the height of the mattress.
Sheets for high mattresses have a special height—up to 38–40 cm. Some have elastic bands only at the corners, while others have them all around. So, as you can see, the measurements of the sheets matter to ensure the bed is properly dressed.
Plain or Printed?
A white cotton fabric has no dyes of any kind, so it preserves the organic and natural properties of the cotton fiber practically unaltered. The production process is shorter, simpler, and more ecological, as it requires only minimal scouring and bleaching treatments. If they have patterns, those that are printed can be made with eco-dyes or not. If they are embroidered, there are fewer chemicals involved.

Materials for Sheets: Who’s Who
· Cotton Sheets: The best quality (and most expensive) is 100% Egyptian cotton, which has extra-long, durable fibers.
· Percale Cotton Sheets: Percale is not a material in itself but a weaving technique that gives the sheet strength and great durability without losing softness.
· Pima or Supima Cotton Sheets: This is a medium- to extra-long staple fiber material, known for its softness and shine, and is a little more affordable than Egyptian cotton.
· Flannel Sheets: These are the warmest sheets, perfect for cold climates. They are also made of cotton, so they are natural fabric, with a soft touch on both sides.
· Coral Fleece Sheets: This is a type of fabric with a soft, velvety feel (similar to a stuffed animal). You will find them made in different weights. The thickest ones are also called microfleece sheets.
· Linen Sheets: Ideal for warm climates, linen sheets are some of the most expensive but will last you for decades.
· Satin Sheets: Ultra-soft and shiny.
· Synthetic Sheets: Economical and wrinkle-resistant. They are very easy to iron.
Many sheets are finished with chemical processes to prevent them from wrinkling or shrinking. If you want to avoid this, look for sheets with specific eco or bio labels, such as those made of organic cotton, without chemical compounds.
